The year early 2000 was a period when the while on one hand the Industries and infrastructure sector
were all set to embrace the new and advanced technologies, like rail & road infrastructure, automobile,
aviation, nuclear, space etc on one hand and digitalization and software on the other. The society at large
was benefitting with these developments, however, the disruptions in production and sustained
operations, product recalls and accidents were also challenging these modern based on new technological
developments.
The two otherwise, appearing opposite goals, viz safety and reliability of systems, structures and
components are to be chased with risk-reduction as the overriding factor. It was required that academics,
R&D and industry should have a umbrella platform to present, debate and discuss the risk and reliability
issues to contribute to the sustainable system metrics.
The idea of hosting an International Conference on Reliability, Safety and Hazard (ICRESH) took birth
during discussions among reliability researchers and practitioners at BARC / DAE and IIT Bombay. This
consensus decision provided the motivation for hosting ICRESH-2005. The success of ICRESH-2005 not
only gave the motivation to host series of the ICRESH events in the coming time, it was also decided that
a Society should be formed that provides an umbrella organization for reliability and risk modeling,
analysis and industry practitioners, to present their work and learn from mutual discussions. Over the
years the success of ICRESH events, in terms of its reach not only at national level but also abroad;
quality papers; tutorials based on high impact theme topics; technical exhibition; and overall conduct of
the event in three parallel proceedings to accommodate over 100 papers / talks; publication of all its
proceedings by reputed international publishers; have made ICRESH – a brand of SRESA, one of the
most well recognized event in the among the risk and reliability practitioners.
Even though the one of the major features, ‘ICRESH Proceedings’ of the past four ICRESH events,
ICRESH-2005, ICRESH-2010, ICRESH-2015 and ICRESH-2019 have been given under
‘PUBLICATION’ in this web-site, the following provides a general information in brief and photo gallery
comprised on selected few images of these events.
ICRESH-2005 has a special place in the heart of SRESA life members in general and the founders of
SRESA in particular as this conference laid the foundation of SRESA.
ICRESH-2005 was organized by Reactor Group of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai as the lead
organizers while many other DAE units of DAE that includes, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Nuclear
Power Corporations of India Limited, Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research, Heavy Water Board
along with Indian Institute of Technology were the co-organizers. The ICRESH-2005 was held during
December 1 – 3, 2005 in Mumbai at Hotel Leela Kempenski. The theme of the conference was
‘Advances in Risk-informed Technology’ - an upcoming field that deals with the science and technology
of application of Probabilistic Safety Assessment’ to complex systems in general and Nuclear Plants in
particular. More than 150 professionals from Indian and abroad, risk and reliability practitioners, scholars
and students participated in this event. The inaugural programme was the high point for this event. Dr.
Anil Kakodkar, Secretary DAE and Chairman Atomic Energy Commission, India, was the Chief Guest
for this ICRESH-2005. The conference proceedings was published by international publisher – NAROSA
based in Delhi (details in publication > icresh).
The ICRESH-2005 established the broad protocol and procedures and a general philosophy and a
value system, including the ‘Atithi Deve Bhavo’, and high quality in all tasks, activities related
to organization and management. ICRESH-2010 was held in Navi Mumbai at Hotel Four Point,
during 14 – 16 December 2010. Dr. S. Banerjee, Chairman AEC and Secretary to Department of
Atomic Energy, India was the Chief Guest and Prof. Michael G. Pecht, Director, CALCE,
University of Maryland, USA was the Guest of Honor for ICRESH-2010. The Bhabha Atomic
Research Centre, Mumbai; CALCE University of Maryland, USA; IEEE Reliability Society;
IIIT, Pune; and SRESA were the organizing partners for ICRESH-2010. Most of the DAE’s
sister institutions along with ISRO, DRDO, DST supported this event. The proceedings of the
ICRESH-2010 was published by IEEE Reliability Society (details in Publication> ICRESH).
Along with other special features of ICRESH-2005, the SRESA Life Time Achievement Awards
were instituted in ICRESH-2010. The distinguished and renowned who contributed significantly
to the field of risk and reliability modeling and analysis were honored with this awards. In fact,
the SRESA felt these distinguished personality honored the SRESA by accepting SRESA Life
Time Achievement Award. Dr Anil Kakodkar, Former Chairman AEC and Secretary, DAE ;
Prof. Michael Pecht, Director, CALCE University of Maryland, USA; Shri S.S. Bajaj, Prof.
Achintya Haldar, Arizona State University, USA and Prof. P.K. Kapur, Delhi University were
the recipients of this award. Some selected images of the ICRESH-2010 are as follows:
With ICRESH-2015 organization the ICRESH events became truly international as the venue
was outside India – Lulea at University of Technology, Sweden under the leadership of Prof.
Uday Kumar, Head, Division of Operations and Maintenance, LTU, Sweden. ICRESH-As usual
the three parallel sessions comprised of invited contributory talks, Pre-conference tutorials,
plenary sessions capturing the keynote talks kept the conference energy levels very high.
Actually ICRESH-2015 was jointly organized with the Swedish initiative as 1 st Conference on Availability, Reliability, Maintainability and Safety (ARMS) and therefore the conference was
named as ICRESH-ARMS-2015.
Keeping in the tradition, the SRESA Life Time Award ceremony as part of the inaugural
programme was high point of ICRESH-2015. Prof. Uday Kumar, Head, O&M, LTU, Sweden;
Prof. Terje Aven, University of Stavanger, Norway; Dr. Dr (Ms) Marina Roewekamp, GRS
Germany & NEA-WGRISK Member. For conference proceedings please see
Publication>ICRESH. Selected images of ICRESH-2015 are as follows
The ICRESH-2019 was the 4 th International Conference on Reliability, Safety & Hazard was
jointly organized with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai as the lead organizer Indian
Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai; Society for Reliability and Safety (SRESA), India; and
CALCE, University of Maryland, College Park, USA; as the co-organizing partners. ICRESH-
2019 was hosted in IIT Madras Campus during 10 – 13 January, 2019. Prof Arun Kumar
Bhaduri, Distinguished Scientist and Director, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research,
Kalpakkam was the Chief Guest for the Inaugural Programme of ICRESH-2014. The pre-
conference tutorials comprising of three parallel running themes’ entitled A) Condition
Monitoring & PHM & NDT B) Physics-of-Failure Methods & PHM; and C) Human
Technologies, Human Reliability and Human Reliability Assessment were conducted on the
first day, i.e. 10 th of January. Shri S. Bhattacharya, BARC was Conference Chairman (General)
and Prof. P.V. Varde, BARC was Conference, Co-Chair along with Prof. Raghu Prakash, IITM.
